Types of Veneers Comparison
What Is Porcelain/Laminate Veneer?
Cosmetic porcelain veneer is one of the quickest and most effective solutions for discoloured teeth (because of tetracycline, fluorine, etc.) or tooth enamel erosion, incipient decay, or for front teeth that are sparse, short, slightly chipped or uneven.
Previously, the veneer procedure requires about 0.5mm to 1.2mm of tooth enamel to be removed to create space for the veneer.
Now, with the support of technology and equipment imported directly from Europe, the Ultrathin veneers are being produced in our Dental Center’s Lab In-House. Ultrathin veneers are only 0.3mm to 0.5mm but reach 400Mpa in hardness (real teeth have hardness of 80-120Mpa) with completely natural color that can cover any undesirable color, shape of the real teeth, giving you a completely new and beautiful smile in just 2 appointments.
- First appointment: Examination, taking X-Rays, general check of teeth condition. Taking intra and extra-oral images from different angles to generate data from which we ‘design’ the ideal smile of yours using Smile Design software. After you have agreed to the treatment plan and chosen your favorite colour and shape, we would take impression to produce your Ultrathin veneer.
- Second appointment (1-2 days later): Teeth cleaning, attach your veneer using materials designed exclusively for Ultrathin veneers. You can have your picture taken at our studio to save this moment!
Laminate veneers are usually the solution if you would like to adjust / align the surface of your teeth. The procedure for laminate veneers also requires only two appointments.
In the first appointment, after you have agreed with your smile design, our doctors will prepare your teeth by removing a small part of tooth enamel, then take impression to produce the laminate veneers. Regular veneers have thickness from 0.5mm to 1.2mm therefore are able to cover larger imperfections of your teeth. In the second appointment, your teeth surface with be covered with resin cement, on which the veneers will be placed and a high-frequency light beam will be used to harden the cement. As a result, your veneer will look as natural as real teeth with healthy surrounding gums.
Both veneers have similar color and both are capable of bringing you a beautiful smile that you have always wished for. Ultrathin veneer is by no doubt a better option as it does not require any part of your real teeth to be removed. Time to complete the veneer placement procedure:
- Two days for 1-4 veneers
- Three to five days for 5 veneers and above.
One of the new types of veneers used at Dr Hung & Associates Dental Center is veneer ‘mask’. It can be used only when necessary to cover imperfections of your teeth. This is a very handy product to use temporarily when you have not made your decision about which is your most suitable treatment.
Treatment procedure for veneer ‘mask’ requires 2 appointments:
- First appointment: Examination, taking X-rays, teeth cleaning and taking impression. The data will be sent to the producers in Germany and the products will be sent back within two weeks.
- Second appointment (after 2 weeks): Guidance to attach and take care of the veneer ‘mask’ during use.
TYPES OF PORCELAIN VENEERS
Veneers can actually be made from several types of ceramic, including:
- Pressed ceramic: Veneers made from this kind of ceramic are quite strong, but they are typically thicker than other types of veneers.
- Stacked ceramic: Stacked ceramic veneers allow ceramists to create veneers that are more precisely customized for each patient.
- Lithium disilicate: This new type of dental porcelain is so strong that even severe bruxers may be candidates for veneers made from this material. Lithium disilicate veneers can only be created with CAD/CAM technology.
CARING FOR PORCELAIN VENEERS
After the placement of porcelain veneers, patients should commit themselves to good oral hygiene regiments, regular visits to the dentist, and generally healthy lifestyles. This helps to ensure the longevity of the veneers, not to mention good oral health.
With proper care, veneers are much more likely to reach the 20 year mark. Along with making regular visits to a general dentist, routine brushing and flossing is the most important thing that patients can do to protect the longevity of their veneers. Although the porcelain itself is not subject to decay, when the underlying tooth structure is damaged by cavities, this can damage the veneer. In many cases, after the cavity is repaired, the tooth is no longer able to support a new veneer.
Protecting Gum Health
Good oral care is also important because it helps prevent gum disease and receding gums, which can compromise the appearance of veneers. Because the porcelain ends at the gum line, if the tissue recedes, the edge of the veneer will become visible, and the entire restoration may need to be replaced. Patients should be diligent about frequent brushing and flossing, but they should also be careful to avoid overly vigorous brushing, as this can also compromise periodontal health.
Avoiding Excessive Force
Habits such as nail biting, chewing ice, and using teeth to open packages are already harmful to teeth, leading to cracks, chips, and dental erosion. Although porcelain is quite strong, it is not quite as tough as natural teeth, so these habits are even more detrimental to patients with veneers. Those with bruxism should also seek treatment before getting veneers or as soon as the condition develops. Although lithium disilicate veneers have proven to be durable even for habitual teeth grinders, treating this condition can further extend their lifespan and protect against related health conditions.
Maintaining the Color of Veneers
Because porcelain is not porous, dental veneers are highly stain resistant. However, the dental cement that holds them in place is still subject to discoloration. When this becomes stained, the edge of a veneer can appear yellowed and unnatural. To protect the color of their smile, dental patients should avoid stain-producing substances such as coffee, tea, wine, berries, soy sauce, and tomato sauce. Smoking is perhaps the most notorious culprit for dental staining.
ADVANTAGES OVER OTHER PROCEDURES
In addition to the comprehensive nature of veneers, this treatment offers a number of advantages over similar alternatives:
- Veneers are stain resistant and last for years at a time. When patients choose teeth whitening treatment, they often receive less dramatic results and must undergo touchup treatments approximately twice a year.
- Veneers look more lifelike than similar enhancements. Cosmetic dental bonding can correct similar flaws, but the material is opaque, meaning it does not reflect light the way porcelain does.
- Veneers are stronger than composite resin.
- Although veneers typically cost more than bonding or teeth whitening, they usually have a smaller price tag than dental crowns.
ORAL HEALTH BENEFITS
The primary benefits of veneers are cosmetic; however, there are several ways that they can boost overall dental health. First, they can lend some strength to damaged teeth. Patients should note, however, that veneers cannot restore a severely damaged or weakened tooth. In these cases, a dental crown will provide better protection for a patient’s oral health.
Encouraging Oral Hygiene
Veneers can also promote good dental hygiene. When patients have a beautifully enhanced, natural smile, they are more likely to practice outstanding care and maintenance. At their initial consultation or at any time during the placement process, patients should ask their dentist about the best way to care for their veneers and protect the underlying teeth.
Health Advantages over Other Dental Procedures
Although veneers typically require some enamel removal, this procedure leaves the majority of the tooth structure intact. In contrast, to place a crown, a dentist must reshape the entire tooth, removing a significant amount of dental material. For patients looking for a more conservative option with minimal tooth modification, veneers may be the ideal alternative.
As with any medical treatment, there are some risks associated with the placement of porcelain veneers. For the most part, these risks are minor and quite rare.
Veneers are considered a very low-risk treatment. However, as with any medical or dental procedure, there is some chance of complications. Because this treatment often involves enamel removal, the biggest risk is that a patient will experience permanent tooth sensitivity, especially to hot or cold temperatures. Typically, if sensitivity lasts for more than 3 to 6 months after veneers placement, this indicates an underlying problem with the procedure. For example, the dental cement may be leaking or the nerve may have been exposed and infected during placement.
There is also a slight risk that the underlying dentin may become damaged during the enamel removal process. Alternatively, a poorly fitting veneer could change the alignment of a patient’s bite, leading to dental sensitivity, discomfort while eating, or, in more extreme cases, bruxism and jaw pain.
Although veneers can last several decades, they must eventually be replaced, and the second placement process will involve another round of enamel removal. Those who already have some enamel erosion before their first treatment may not have enough material for a second placement. In these cases, they will require an alternative restoration such as cosmetic bonding or a dental crown. Patients should discuss their replacement options before receiving their first set of veneers. If they are not willing to consider alternative treatments in the future, they should not choose a procedure that will permanently alter their teeth.
Minimizing the Risks
As stated above, veneers are considered to be a very safe dental treatment, and there are several things that patients can do to further reduce their risks. First, they should be cautious when choosing their cosmetic dentist, following the guidelines listed above. By reading reviews from past patients, they can determine whether a particular dentist has a history of case complications. Second, if they are truly concerned about dental sensitivity or the permanent nature of veneers, patients may opt for no-prep veneers. Because they require little enamel removal, if any, the risk of sensitivity is lower. Patients should be aware, however, that some dentists believe no-prep veneers look less natural than traditional veneers.
ALTERNATIVES TO PORCELAIN VENEER
If you or your dentist decides that porcelain veneers are not the right treatment for you for any reason, there are several other options that can rejuvenate and restore radiance to your smile.
For patients with insufficient dental enamel or for those who are hesitant to permanently alter the structure of their teeth, dental bonding, often called composite veneers, may the optimal solution. A dentist applies dental composite to the front of a patient’s teeth. This material is carefully selected to match the natural color of his or her smile. By carefully sculpting the material, the dentist can achieve many of the same results possible with veneers. Like veneers, bonding can correct severe stains, cracks, misaligned teeth, and gaps between teeth. Unlike veneers, however, composite resin is opaque and does not offer the natural sheen of porcelain.
Patients who are looking to enhance the color of their smile may opt forteeth whitening. By chemically breaking down the bonds that hold dental stains together, both in-office and at-home treatment can lighten teeth by up to eight shades. However, this treatment is only suitable for extrinsic stains, such as those caused by food or smoking. Whitening treatment will not affect tetracycline stains or the discoloration caused by decay or an old dental filling.
In some ways, dental crowns are very similar to veneers. Custom-made to match a patient’s natural teeth, these tooth-shaped porcelain caps fit over a damaged tooth. However, unlike veneers, a crown extends all the way around a tooth, meaning the dentist must remove a significant amount of the dental structure. Crowns are an excellent option for patients who have considerable damage that affects the strength or structural integrity of a tooth. However, for patients who are simply seeking cosmetic enhancements, veneers are an effective, less invasive option.
As stated above, those with severely crooked teeth or malocclusion may not be good candidates for veneers. Rather, they may want to consider more comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Thanks to modern dental advances, patients are not limited to traditional metal braces; they can also choose tooth-colored brackets, clear aligner trays, and accelerated treatment options.

I had 6 fillings, a root canal, 2 crowns, an extraction, a bridge the whole treatment! My daughter lives in Saigon and I set her the task of finding a clinic for the overwhelming amount of work I needed done! She contacted several and visited HD where Liz showed her around and made the decision very easy. While I intended to get a lot of work done I increased the treatement two fold. Dr Tan was amazing and very patient as I am not the bravest patient. The amazing assistant Thuy was there holding my hand the entire time. I can not recommend the clinic highly enough as none of what I had done was straightforward and I am extremely happy with the outcome! Thank You All!!"

Seeing Dr Hung was the best decision that we could have made” (21 September 2016) “My Husband and I decided to come to Vietnam to see Dr Hung as we both needed some serious dental work. I did do plenty of research on my computer and also asked people who had had dental work done in Vietnam and Dr Hung name kept coming up, So after much consultation, we made our way to see Dr Hung which was the best decision that we could have made. My husband had a plate for nearly forty years and now he has bridges and it seemed so easy for the dentist here to achieve this. I myself have a terrible fear of dentist, but I should have not worried as Dr Loc was amazing, so gentle and kind and so caring to put up with me and all my fears and made me feel completly at ease thank you Dr Loc and thank you to Dr Uan for being so professional and kind and for doing such a wonderful job of my Husbands teeth.”

Great overall experience! Ive come from Australia to Vietnam to get my teeth done with my family and was not let down by the prices (which was at least a quarter cheaper than it would have been at home) and the treatment from the people that work at the clinc. I had 4 crowns and 4 fillings and the staff made me feel at ease. I would recommend this to all my friends and family. Would not go anywhere else. I was told about this clinic by someone in Australia and was very impressed with the service of the staff, the qualifications of the dentists and cleanliness of the clinic. It was all very professional, I was given a tour of the clinic before starting any dental work and after getting a CT scan, the dentists sat and gave me an in detail explanation of all the procedures I was getting done. They did not go ahead with anything I was not comfortable with and answered all my questions. I really dont like the dentist, but this was a pain free experience and I tell everyone i know it was totally worth it!!"

From a very first contact with Dr.Hung &Associates Dental Center to the very last goodbyes, we were totally in awe with this clinic. There is no chance we would receive so much care and attention anywhere else, neither in Europe nor Australia. The pickup was arranged for our family from the airport and then, next day we were taken from our hotel to the clinic. I have never seen dental clinic (and I have seen a lot!) to be this scale- huge premises, beautifully arranged, modern, almost futuristic, bright and smelling like exclusive perfume mixed with incense- definitely not the ordinary dental clinic smell, which makes you sick to the stomach with fear wanting to turn around and run. On contrary it was very calming atmosphere and from the moment we entered the main floor clinic, we knew, we are in good hands. Everything went very smooth, first examination, scans, photographs, dental hygiene (cleaning), etc. helped us to relax even more and win our trust. After medical team consultation, we were given treatment plan with costs involved, so it was our choice which procedures we wanted to go with. My husband just opted for 1 crown- this was his main goal for the visit, although I decided to go with full treatment considering how affordable it was (app. $4000USD). I must admit the price I was offered was just a little fraction I would pay anywhere else in the world, not talking about Australia- the costs I would need to pay there for this kind of treatment, would require a small fortune! The work involved: 6 porcelain veneers, x1 extraction, fillings, bridge, crowns (I’ve lost the count how many- it was a lot). Nevertheless, almost whole upper jaw had to be “redesigned” plus 4 lower teeth. I was shown computer made pics what I will look like after full treatment, so it was very easy to make a decision. It took me only 4 days to get the full work done. The whole team of professionals was involved- I have never experienced so much loving care, attention, precision and motivation! Had 2 incredible doctors (Dr. Ngo Cong Uan, responsible for crowns and the other Dr. – I will never forgive myself not remembering his name- responsible for veneers) and uncountable number dental assistants and other specialists responsible for things like proportions of face, colours of veneers, colours of crowns, fittings, etc.etc… Honestly, now almost 2 weeks later, I am back home and can’t stop smiling- my smile never looked better and I get complimented often how beautiful and healthy my teeth look! From a bottom of my heart I wanted to thank everyone at Dr.Hung & associates: administrators (Liz in particular), assistants, doctors, Dr. Hung himself for supervising the entire work, other professionals working there! You all been fantastic team! Absolutely superb clinic, one of the best I have ever been (not just in Vietnam, but also Europe and Australia). To be honest, majority of Australian or European clinics should shut themselves down and stop embarrassing Dentist profession for once. After experiencing the treatment here would never go anywhere else. It is much more cost effective to fly to Vietnam and get the job done with most reliable specialists and modern equipment at Dr.Hung clinic than going to average Australian dentist and paying fortune for, say, 1 filling.” I am sure we will visit you again! With love,

These guys are so good at what they do you’d be an idiot to go anywhere els” “I had 27 zirconia crowns fitted by Dr Uan Ngo and the guy is a magician i can’t stop looking at the work he has carried out just wished i had come years ago . Dr Ngoc Thuy Truong Thi performed 2 root canals after finding issues with 2 molars which had given me no end of drama for quite a long time . After many years of putting up with dental problems and hours and hours of research to find a good dentist overseas I decided to take the plunge and attend Dr Hungs dental clinic in Vietnam and it is a decision that i feel i will never regret . Look these guys are so good at what they do you’d be an idiot to go anywhere else .I felt totally comfortable from the moment i walked through their front door . And how could i ever forget to mention the dental nurses that worked on my case Bear and Dang two absolute angels . As far as the cost goes you would not find a better dental clinic anywhere in the world for the price and peace of mind you have by going their . Will be back in 6 months for 2 implants and will return to Vietnam for holidays and check ups . Love you guys feels like I’ve not only found a good dentist but made also awesome friends for life . Thankyou so much . Cheers”

“Hi there! I have just completed treatment at Dr Hung’s Dental Centre. I have had 21 Porcelain Veneers and a bridge. After 8 days, I have now completed my procedures. I visited the Clinic every day (except for 2 days) and now I can smile confidently. After nearly 60 years of constant dental work in Australian, these past 8 days have changed my life! I travel overseas (I am from Australia) and each time I left ‘home’ I worried about my teeth – would a filling fall out or a tooth break?? With this treatment, I will be relaxed whilst travelling in future. I would recommend Dr Hung’s Dental Central to friends – with no hesitation. Of the many dental practices here in Vietnam, I chose Dr Hung because I have had several positive reviews from friends. The premises have the latest equipment and they are spotlessly clean. The staff are fantastic and are very friendly and obliging. They speak English (lots of Vietnamese are not bi-lingual… and my Vietnamese isn’t good !!) In Australia, I would not have been financially able to afford the veneers etc. And time to have the dental work completed, would have been long and drawn out ! My Private Health Insurance would not have covered the total cost of the procedure. My sincere thanks go to Dr Hung and his wonderful staff. From Liz (my Clinic Contact), to the Reception Staff, to the Lab workers, to my personal dentist, Dr Tri and his assistance, my experience with Dr Hung has been fantastic to say the least. I look forward to many years of glowing smiles

The crowns fit like a glove and the value was excellent I have had ten crowns fitted as most of my molars had large fillings from many years ago and were beginning to fail. The crowns fit like a glove and the value was excellent compared to Australia. I chose Dr. Hung Dental after a lot of research on the internet, as his reputation is excellent. I was not disappointed. The clinic is spotless and all the staff are very efficient and extremely courteous."

My parents and I were travelled to Ho Chi Minh city and we had our dental check-up & treatments during the trip. We all have beautiful smile and nice teeth, staff are friendly and helpful. Receptionists are super responsive to the email and messages. Special thanks to Dr. Tri who helped me for the 6 veneers, he is a humour and friendly dentist. They care about the patients' feelings and make sure the whole treatment is painless. Also, they do explain clearly what are the treatments and procedures we have to go through in order to avoid we feel insecure, especially we are the foreigners to the country. Clean, neat, bright, professional.

The dental work performed was perfect I initially came to Dr Hungs Clinic for Dental Implant after an Australian dentist diagnosed that I needed an extraction on one of my molar teethe that had partially broken off. Dr Hung and his team said I would not need this done and they performed a root canal and crown along with 3 other crowns. In addition 7 fillings All the staff from reception to clinical were all very professional. They picked me up from the Airport and to the hotel. The dental work performed was perfect. No complaints of significant pain or discomfort. They saved me a lot of money compared to an Australian dentist. I plan to come back to this clinic for any further dental work and would rcommend it to anyone

We would highly recommend this clinic to anyone interested in having dental work done My husband and I both had treatment. He had 27 crowns and 2 bridges. I had 9 crowns, 1 bridge, one amalgam removed and replaced with a porcelain filling, 2 wisdom teeth removed. Plus teeth whitening. My husbands teeth were in very poor condition- just worn out.He was really in need of a major overhaul. We are both extremely happy with how it all went and the outcome is fantastic. We would highly recommend this clinic to anyone interested in having dental work done at really reasonable prices and very professionally done. Wonderful. We had this clinic recommended to us by a friend who had had done work there and knew other people who also had been there for treatment and were very happy with their experience. We were very impressed from the moment we arrived at the clinic. The Clinic itself if very modern and welcoming. The staff are exceptional from the ladies behind reception to the dental nurses and the dentists themselves. All very professional and caring and kind. We have absolutely no bad comments to say about the experience we had at this clinic. Highly recommended...

Treatment received was 15 crowns both aesthetic at front & protection of back molars. Teeth whitening also. I would definitely recommend this dental centre to family and friends for both excellent value and an outstanding result. I researched dental clinics on the Internet for several countries. Dr Hung Dental Center stood out for presentation and a professional image. The whole process from greeting, introduction to staff, importantly the treatment and follow up was outstanding. I could not be happier with the result. The center, the professional treatment and result, the staff: all aspects warrant a 5 star rating.

I am 64 years old and have lots of work done on my teeth. I live in The united states. I had an emergency crown done, cost me $1250. They told me that I needed 4 more crowns. My sister-in-law is Vietnamese, so I occasionally go to Vietnam. So I found Dr. Hungs office in HCMC and made an appointment. When they were cleaning my teeth, they found another crown that was starting to deteriorate, so I had five crowns in total installed. I am very happy with my experience in Dr. Hung’s office. It started out at 1 o’clock in the morning they picked me up from the airport, and took me to my hotel. The next morning they picked me up at my hotel and took me to the clinic, to make sure that I could find my way. Then they took me on a tour of their totally modern facility. I was able to view the sterilizer room, all of the operatory, the surgery suite, x-ray suite and they have their own in-house dental lab. All of the equipment appeared to me to be new and modern. They told me that the equipment was mostly made in Germany. I allocated eight days for the dental treatment. They were very conscientious, and managed my appointments very well so that I had plenty of time for the dental work and a little time afterward, incase I had a problem. By the time the last crown prep was completed, I was tired. If I had many more crowns to be done, I think I would’ve had to wait for them until the next day. It is hard to keep your mouth open that long. All of the people that I needed to talk to spoke English, and I did not have any problem with the communications. They provide a wide range of choices for the materials, I picked the best materials for my crowns, solid ceramic. And of course, all of the work I had done, cost a little more than the one crown that I had replaced on an emergency basis at my dentist here in the states. Overall the process was painless, except for a small amount of discomfort on one of the shots of anesthetic. Both the dentist and the assistant were conscientious and constantly checking with me to make sure that I was comfortable. At first I was kinda suspicious of whatClinic. However I discovered during this review process, they actually called my cell phone, for me to verify that I left this review. I think that is interesting, and gives me a lot of confidence in this review process. I checked the prices of half a dozen clinics in Ho Chi Minh City, I found Dr. Hung's clinic to be competitive with their prices. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone. If someone was interested, they also do laser treatments (skin treatments) in the same building.

A brighter and happy smile I had many holes in my teeth. Some were broken and badly decaying. I had 2 root canals and had crowns and bridges fit along with several fillings and wisdom teeth out. They also whitened and cleaned them to give me a bright and happy smile. Thank You. I was very happy with the professionalism and cleanliness of the clinic. They were very gentle and I had minimal pain- I wasn't in Ho Chi Minh for a very long time and they managed to get all my treatment done.

Wearing Denture for more than 10yrs. Too many loose and unhealthy teeth and was very hard for me to eat, smile and to socialize with other people due to low self-confidence, and thus low self-esteem. I thought I will not be able to smile again with confidence and that it is in my dreams only… Until I met Dr. Hung & Associates Dental Center. I live in United Arab Emirates and had the Oral Treatment here in Vietnam and so far, it’s a great experience and it’s really worth. Had 6 extractions of decayed teeth, filling and crowns of some teeth, and had 3 fixed bridge (upper and lower) and they gave me free whitening treatment as a gift. They allowed me also to stay for free with their Patient’s lounge/accommodation with complete home appliances for 12 days (the total days that I stayed with them for the actual treatment and had some time to explore the Tourist destinations in their country). Excellent and amazing experience. Excellent and friendly staff, their Doctor’s are really accommodating and caring to patients. Almost majority of the Patients are from different countries (including me) and I really saw the passion of caring with them. Even the Doctor’s assistant, they will really care for you. All of the staff of this clinic is really the best and very friendly. It’s really an amazing experience and I wont regret that I traveled that much from Middle East to Vietnam for the Oral Treatment. Thumbs up for my experience with them, and the cost of the treatment is really different and quite cheap than other Countries offering Dental Tourism/Treatment but, the products that they used/utilized is/are really top of the class. Thankyou Guys! I can smile confidently again.
