FAQ About Implants

FAQ About Implants

Implant placement is so far the most modern and advanced solution in replacing lost tooth/teeth. Questions have been asked about implant placement and we are willing to give answer as followed:

1. What is an Implant?

A dental implant is a cylindrical post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone so that it can fuse with your natural bone and become a strong and sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace an individual tooth or for an implant-supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth.

2. Is dental implant for me?

Dental implants can be used when:

A single tooth is missing – instead of a bridge
Several teeth are missing – instead of bridges or partial dentures
All teeth are missing – instead of dentures
With dental implants, you can eat most foods you want, depending on the type of implant restoration because these new teeth are strong and stable – they look and feel like your own natural teeth. They give you back your smile.

3. What are implants’ benefits compared to crowns and dentures?

Bridges, dentures, and implants can replace missing teeth.

A bridge requires filing two adjoining teeth, which can make them weaker and prone to decay.
Dentures often have fit problems and can interfere with taste.
For an implant, a titanium screw is placed in the jawbone and a prosthetic tooth is attached. A proper implant has no physical downside and has good longevity.

4. Who should not have implant placement?

People under 16 years of age whose bone system has not fully developed should not have implant placement.
Pregnant women: Taking X-Rays and the anesthesia process during implant treatment may have negative impact to the baby.
Patients with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure…

5. Are all implants similar?

Most dentists use implants made by the original Swedish manufacturer; studies have found that these implants have high success rates (90% or more).

There are also some newer, generic implants that are cheaper but may not have been studied yet. An average, implants with known brand and reputation would give higher success rate and longevity than those with less reputation.

With rare exceptions, we do not recommend our patients to use cheap implant brands, which can cause you troubles after few years of using.

6. How long does it take for implant placement?

The whole implant placement process involves two main stages:

Stage 1: The complete stage would require 8-10 days. During the surgery, it would take approximately 20-30 minutes per implant (See: Implant Placement Procedure)
Stage 2: Prosthesis – takes place 4-6 months after the implant placement, which requires 10-14 days.
You might require to have Bone Graft or Sinus Lift during the implant placement.

7. How long do implants last?

Once a dental implant has fused to the bone successfully and it is functional, it should last many years if cared for properly. Many implants have now been in place for 40 years (and might even last longer!).

9. Can my body reject a dental implant?

Rejection of dental implants because of an allergy to titanium is extraordinarily rare, but it can happen. Occasionally an implant also doesn’t “take” or fuse to the bone the first time, either because it develops a capsule of fibrous tissue around it instead of fusing to the bone, or it gets infected. In either case it is simply removed and the site is allowed to heal. Then your surgeon can place another implant, which will integrate with the bone normally.
